This Red Thing Valentines.

  • In summary;it doesn’t matter what you’ve done for your significant other all year if you fail to remember this one day.You could have bought her a plot of land and build her dream house, but if you forget a thousand-shillings worth of flowers which will die in a days time you’re the most unromantic son in the universe.

Now that Valentine’s shenanigans are over, it feels a little safer to dig a bit into the origin of the day that made me occupy my mind to get my gifts delivered on time or else I would be that dead son of soil. In my budget was red roses, red outfits and a bottle of something called Belaire Luxe, a champagne from burgundy that goes for slightly over USD.80, and tastes very much like regular muratina..

One popular theory connects Valentine’s Day to a Christian martyr named Saint Valentine. The Catholic Church recognises several saints named Valentine, but the most commonly mentioned is a priest in Rome during the third century.

The 8th-century ,Gelasian Sacramentary recorded the celebration of the Feast of Saint Valentine on February 14.The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries, when notions of courtly love flourished, apparently by association with the “lovebirds” of early spring. In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion for couples to express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards. Valentine’s Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid.

Yes,this valentine I did my part as a boy child to making sure that the basics are met. Before expressing my love to my Valentine I had to show love to my own self by Joining Our Mombasa Walk Movement Bonje Valentine’s 2nd edition organized 4 days earlier.

Love was literally and figuratively poured into the streets of Mombasa as over 1,000 residents participated in a 19km walk to celebrate this year’s Valentine’s Day.

The young, old and youth thronged to the street to participate in the walk organized by the Mombasa Walk Movement.

So ,on the 10th, February we walked for 19 km to celebrate our health.

Legend has it that Valentine defied the Roman Emperor Claudius II, who had prohibited marriages for young men, believing that single men made better soldiers. Valentine continued to marry young couples in secret. When discovered, he was imprisoned and eventually executed on February 14. Ouch! Kind of makes Valentine’s Day Good for lovers, especially to a Man of the world.Thats why it’s very important to send a gift(No matter how small) to a woman you truely love.

Some historians link Valentine’s Day to the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, which took place in mid-February, a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, and Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. And the theories will go on and on.

The commercialisation of Valentine’s Day, with the mass production of cards and the exchange of gifts, gained momentum in the 19th century. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done for your significant other all year, if you fail to remember this one day. you’re the most unromantic son in the universe. Where did the red colour theme come from ? May be because of the blood the Valentine matyr shed?

To the red colour!!, this son of soil decided to pull a surprise to the old girl. We all left for work in our different fields. However I managed to sneak back to the house to colour the entire room red. Yes, pulled the red curtains up, the beddings red. Literally everything was red.Placed the Rose as bed centre piece. Off to plan for dinner.

Yes the suprise worked,It blew her off..All my sins for a year were pardoned.. To end the day was a church organization dinner where we had a good time with the speaker of the day.

I remember one woman who said, “I’d rather get a packet of maize flour than a bunch of inedible flowers.” I believe come judgment day, that woman will suffer a similar fate to the biblical Eve. You remember her, right? Apparently, she’s the reason women lose a tonne of blood once every month and get moody. My partner overheard that couples conversation on adjacent table. So I went ahead and posed a question.

“Diana,” I said to my love, (just to get her opinion on the woman conversation) -“I’ve loved you since the first day I laid eyes on you and I’ve done everything in my power to show how much you mean to me. What’s one day compared to valentine”

She answered “If you don’t get me flowers and wine,” she said, “you’re dead to me.”!!!!

The excitement of Yatch excursion

Finding joy in the simple pleasure of good food and and amazing friends above the waters!

Planning a day out with friends is always fun. We decide where to go, what to do, and what food to bring. We make sure everyone agrees with the plan. This way, everyone feels involved and excited. And so I was involved in organizing on the best possible thing to do.

Having time on the Yatch was what we agreed on.Its excitement and steaming off is on the next high level. The Yatch Gang group was formed.Group of nine with equal contribution to the fun.ating, laughing, and making memories – just another day with my favorites. Friends who munch together, stick together! Cheers to food, friendship, and fabulous times!”

Excited and energized we set off from our meeting point at the garden park lounge restaurant to our walk to one of the floating restaurant in mtwapa, the gem of kilifi. During our trek to the mtwapa creek, we had to endure some coastal heat as well as rain, which made a funny and slippery time on the muddy path. Slow and steady did it, or ‘pole-pole’, as they say here in Swahili.

After enjoying a freshly brewed mug of coffee, we were treated to a locally produced lunch . On the menu were charcoal roasted whole fish and fish soup, vegetables, rice, and chicken. A delicious and hearty meal was what we needed before setting off on our excursion.

The journey along the way passes through the footpath trail a neighborhood so close to nature. You can observe the local dwellings and chat with some locals. There’s an abundance of fruit and food vendors throughout the route with soft drinks and fresh squeezed madafu in plentiful supply. You’ll also pass a few ‘forest pubs’ where they’re serving the local wine, ‘Mnazi’ which I was assured is much stronger than regular beer or normal wine.

The yacht squeals while it slips off the trolley into the bitterly cold harbour’s water. The sails tighten and the boat leaps forward, away from the safety of the shore. The tame lapping of ripples against the hull rings out across the bay. The soft breeze streams through our hair and the chill nips at our faces.

At the moorings floating restaurant

A day out with friends is more than just fun. It’s a day of bonding, making memories, and strengthening our friendship. It’s a day that brings us closer and makes us appreciate each other more. It’s a day we look forward to and cherish.

In conclusion, a day out with friends is a special event. It’s a day filled with laughter, fun, and memories. It’s a day that strengthens our bonds and deepens our friendships. It’s a day we will always remember and cherish. It’s a day that makes us appreciate the simple joys of life and the value of friendship.

As out Yatch captain “docks back” after a happy excursion and a sunset cruise, all of us were happy and refreshed. Before we realized it was nightfall..

Next will be an all out food adventure …

In 2005 a similar ship docked by the name of MS Doulos docked at the Port City of Mombasa on a similar mission. I was previledged to work on board doing sandwiches and beverages while in Mombasa. Duolos is expected to begin her 2024 expeditions making her first stop-over in Maputo, Mozambique in January, so am informed

The floating book fair was to come to Mombasa in 2015 but the voyage was suspended due to fears of insecurity. MV Logos Hope’s visit to the country was organized in partnership of Kenya Ports Authority, the county government of Mombasa and Kenya Tourism Board. Each stall showcased a certain type of coastal delicacy – making it a culinary delight festival. From Kaimati to mkate Sinia, shawarma to biriani mahamri to fresh squeezed juices and many more. The Mombasa Food Festival is an annual event that supports and cultivates the region’s food culture. Different food vendors from coastal counties – Kwale, Kilifi, Lamu, Mombasa, Taita Taveta – turn up. But however this year not all coastal regions were represented. I noted only Mombasas Street food delights.

They are the ambassadors of the region’s scintillating food culture and they always turn up in droves.

Aware of the delight that comes with the festival, the 2022 Mombasa Food Festival edition welcomed thousands of residents at Mama Ngina which coincided with the New Year eve Fireworks. Curious international travelers with a knack for Coastal cuisine were not left behind. I noted that international Media were also represented , including CNNs @Larry Madowo

Mombasa County government organized the festival as a way to promote business and culinary Tourism as well.

Mombasa County Tourism chief said the food festival was a platform for entrepreneurs in the food sector to showcase. There were at least 70 food vendors at the festival. The presence of both international and local tourists augured well for the event.

These are the eyeballs the event always targets every year.

What’s The Importance Of the Mombasa Food Festival?

The gastronomic delight of the festival is pivotal in driving the region’s tourism. History has it that those Swahili dishes warm up to the hearts of local and international guests visiting the coast.

Coupled with a rich holidaying history, food adds up to the magical touch of Mombasa and surrounding counties.

Food vendors at the festival reportedly made good money from their exhibitions. Some landed bigger business opportunities.

Hotels at the Coast also got an opportunity to market their products and services during the festival.

The highlight of the day was an eating competition where the champion was to finish a 1kg pilau (rice and meat dish cooked with Zanzibar spices) . A 1litre bottle of water as well as 1litre Soda in a record time. When the winner was announced, it was obvious

Nature And Trails:That is Bamburi Nature Trails

In Mombasa, Bamburi cement is one of the greatest names in construction industry, It is closely associated with the Haller Park, a world famous ecological rehabilitation site.Once a barren landscape ravaged by years of quarrying, it is now a rich tropical ecosystem bursting with life both wild animal and plant life.Haller the Man, is a brilliant example of how man can reclaim nature and create an environmentally friendly attraction.

The fish pond

The park was created by nature-loving scientists who divided it into several unique sites. The best is the animal park which boasts of Hippos, giraffes ,antelopes and even waterbucks. Another is the quarry viewpoint where nature and industry co-exist in one dramatic landscapes. At this point, one can see the early stages of rehabilitation against a backdrop of an open, active quarry and the cement factory.

Only at Haller Park will one enjoy unique Day walks . This is another segment where the trails is in a class of its own. The park literally is another picnic site. The forest trails are a sanctuary to many reptiles, birds and butterflies. The rich biodiversity is reflected in the over 400 plant and 180 bird species found in the rehabilitated quarries. One of the most interesting attractions at the park is the animals’ feeding, which takes place every day.

Forest trails are located on one side of the park 1km away, where they form a rare facility designed specifically for outdoor creation. There are four carefully designed trails that meander through the developing landscapes in the former quarry.

The Haller Park also has a unique sunset terrace perfect for relaxation and unwinding.

The 3.6-kilometre leisure walk has alternating landscapes from barren quarries to a lush rehabilitated forest. Other unique attractions include the butterfly pavilion found at the exhibition house where butterflies can be appreciated in their lovely colours. But this one however in my second visit couldn’t Get to see.

Again there are bikes on site for those who need a physical activity . What I liked even more is that all the routes are marked and the distance for each route. Whether jogging, cycling or even leisure walk. All are colour coded.

A well marked signage

The park has become more serene and beautiful than the previous visit. The kids enjoyed the scenery. The butterfly pavilion however, did not have butterflies maybe it was not the season. The trails are safe and very clean and one can walk through them without a guide. If you have small children advisable to have a walker or carrier because they get tired from walking.Within the reception it has places one can sit and relax. But unfortunately no restaurant on site. Am told that during COVID-19 time they scaled down on the operations. So make sure you carry your own food and drinks which they allow. However no dumping is allowed within the park.

This is one among many activities or places you need to visit while in Mombasa. Rene Haller, the founder, believed animals play an important role in the forest ecosystem as plants. Located along Mombasa- malindi highway it’s just opposite Bamburi beach hotel and near the pirates public beach.

Enjoy your trails….

Soak your soul in the love language,Take a culinary day out.

What you need to know:

Diani/Mombasa is a destination where cordiality and love are celebrated. Here lovers get to come alive as they officially start their matrimonial journeys and enjoy a honeymoon together.Mine wasn’t a honey moon but a trip to dip my feet into sandy beaches of southcoast.

Eliud and Dee

Dee, My Fiance lay on her back as she smiled, her eyes sheltering behind blue sunglasses as she blissed in the delight of swimming in the splashy green and blue waters of the Indian Ocean.

It is a sunny Sunday afternoon and tourists, several of them couples and families, are out swimming in the ocean while others either sit or walk, and some kick some white sands.

Diani is a destination where cordiality and love are celebrated. There, lovers get to come alive as they officially start their matrimonial journeys and enjoy a weekend or honeymoon together.

Kongo public beach access point

Diani has a history which keep the body warm, a vast clean coastline but it is the people around that give you the psychological warmth . People will greet you with smiles that tickle the soul and tenderize the heart to the idea that Kenya coast is indeed a beautiful thing. I started sampling the Diani coastline from The Jacaranda hotel to Neptune .Quite a distance but it’s worth taking.

Most of the hotel staff I interacted with are natural at making guests feel at home at their facilities. From the local eateries to exclusive restaurants the pattern is almost similar. From the artistically chiselled Arab doors that I was glad to study closer to appreciate the precise designs that exhibit patterns that represent the lifestyle of the coastal people whose lifestyles were heavily influenced by the Arabic and Portuguese traders in the past century.

I was to later take note of the weather. The environment is suitably warm and cold too. I was welcomed to gentle rain drizzles from the open skies that seemed to signal a good week ahead at the subjectively natural coastal luxury compound.

Dee is a lover of style and an outdoor kind. So after booking in for the day, we left our room to venture outside for a walk which turned to be an all day affair. We walked along the beach, took boat cruises, canoe rides, kite surfing, scuba diving, marine tours and swimming in the ocean . What’s interesting is that all these activities are managed by the local community groups.Hence good income to them.

Community run beach restaurant

For lovers of culture and the unique heritage of the coastal people, The Beach operators showcase their wares along the road. Shukas, handicrafts, curvings and art drawings are displayed to showcase true Swahili style that embodies use of stones or wood richly decorated. Wooden high hanging ceiling are not left behind beautified using baskets, local shakers, mats, shuka and more.

The roadside curvings and artifacts

In every Restaurant you enter; Lovebirds, the introvert, extrovert, friends, and groups- private or corporate will find a place to sit and talk, sit and enjoy a meal, rest or even sleep and probably contented of the security and hospitality offered across..

Jacaranda resort beach stretch

A large swimming pool

Somewhere along the beach line, tourists love going about the simple pleasures of life; cuddling, turning pages of their favourite novel cover to cover, undisturbed, smoke a cigar, or just listen to the indulgent sound of waves hitting against each other on the gigantic blue Indian Ocean- the third largest on our planet Earth.Along the road leading to popular clubs street food joints their is always a well maintained lawns of the compound, the environment in Diani is well maintained to it’s natural state. You breath fresh air from the trees. Also the roadside is covered with pots that serves a decorative placement. It should additionally serve to remind the tourist visitors of the enviable traditional life of the coastal and indeed African people.

Fried fish with corn meal.
sugar cane, beetroot juice
Fried snapper and spinach

But it is the culinary offerings that got my palate excited,Dee, My Fiance is a lover of Fish, a lover of food,And thats why she is Romantically endowed each day .This trip was meant for her ,for us, to re-energize our love and no other place other than Diani. Diani for me any time. As we say bye-bye to Diani we say keep the hospitality alive. Fish, coffee chai(tea) and Ooh I forgot Dee loves vodka and whisky too.

A Kenyan Living.

Happy Thursday my people!!! I hope you have been great past half year and the just commenced last quarter is taking all of you easy. It’s been hard for us all with election campaigns and subsequent voting, it’s still not over till it’s over, The supreme court’s verdict is to come in the next two weeks. Anyway, politics aside. It has been a challenging past couple of years for most of us. Every single year comes with a new set of challenges and this year seems to be the year of tightening belts that were already suffocatingly tight! It will be a challenge, but we will overcome! And as we go through economically tough year lets us also think on how to make our stomach full.

Challenges will always be there, therefore let us make room for joy in whichever way it finds us. I am currently deeply enjoying my cooking with the family and friends. I am enjoying the noise and sizzling onions from the pot. I am enjoying scents of fresh flavours and Kenyan aromas in my home. And certainly, I am enjoying great food! Tilapia fish is a must in most of family meals.

My days collection:fried tilapia with ugali And spinach .

I have done several stew recipes (chicken, beef, fish )in the past but this one is the one I love most; chicken stew/curry with a mild spicy touch. Food shouldn’t be boring , Food shouldn’t be expensive..get the most available ingredients and turn around the basics. This is exactly how I make my stews at home and I am particularly excited about sharing this beauty with you guys.Kienyeji chicken is delicious, she is slow cooked, she is unforgettably heavenly. !

A free range chicken curry

Today it’s not about recipe but generally how to make your Kenyan plate awesome. If getting local chicken is a challenge or expensive then go for broiler which is cheaper and good for deepfry or broasting .

Broasted chicken , glutinous rice and assorted vegetables

Finally don’t forget the kids who like their fries and some chicken rolled Naan.

Chicken rolled naan bread.

Have a wonderful weekend ahead…. Ready to take Kenya plate on the international space.Food brings you together..

Farm To Grill

It’s a Saturday afernoon and yes as a foodie I decided to go for my lunch in a cosy outdoor beach set-up. If you need to understand what Farm to Grill means then visit Char Choma restaurant in Bamburi beach – mombasa.

Char Choma is along Mombasa malindi highway opposite whitesands beach hotel. They have assorted fresh meat cuts on a chilled display where you choose what you need ,weighed and wait as they grill it for you. What a wonderful conceipt !!.

So I decided together with my partner to visit for late lunch .We love our chicken, Chargrilled Thai-style for mains accompanied by Roast potato wedges.

They gave us 50 minutes wait time for our oder to be served. They have a wonderful outdoor beach sitting area ,so we sat sipping our 7 year scotch whisky and fresh squeezed fruit juice.

When we arrived we were ushered to a sitting area where we could catch the ocean breeze. The waitress had all the smiles and took a minute to get our table ready. OK, so we didn’t have a reservation, but the restaurant was full. There was a reason to make this restaurant full at this time .

The service was great and the potato wedges were crispy and too much to finish.

The sauces accompaning our food were amazing with lots of flavour, very impressive for a casual dining restaurant.

We ordered for a free range chicken thigh as a main dish and spinach with cream. They both looked delicious from the look of plating. True to the eyes The food was tasty and flavourful .!

When the waitress asked if everything was ok , we didn’t have anything to say but thank her for her good service.Overal i liked the wedges and the entire food.’That’s funny, Right?I loved them’ and that was it.

I was really excited about visiting Char Choma and would recommend it to anyone who is not in a hurry for a fresh cooked meal as you wait. The Food and service experience was not disappointing…

What A party !!

Sheraton Villagio beach hotel

This post might be a long one and a little late, however better late than never. We had our staff party a month ago and it was fun.

Office holiday parties can be a fun time for co-workers to get to know each other on a more personal level without talking of deadlines, budgets or clients.Parties can be the perfect place to celebrate the holidays together while unwinding away from the stress of the office. However, there is those co-workers who drink a little too much, makes a fool of themselves on the dance floor, overshares about something or even worse.

And making fun of the comrade..

Now here is the story. In our past event I was given a role to organize thid event due to the fact that in my previous assignment I worked for a hotel and event company which is fairly known. As such , getting the venue, Food and drink items , sporting activities were my responsibilities.

Precisely Dec, 11th -2021, was the D-Day . Coincidentally our country was as well celebrating Madaraka day(Post colonial era)in our calendar. Double celebration.

The structure of the party was such that a large swimming pool area was rented by us(Now that the venue was identified)and the costs of the event was split as such. It had all the makings of a sh*t show and it did not disappoint. Before even the party began employees pre-drank for loss of a better word.

Infact one of co-worker got so drunk till he was doing high kicks and before we realize he was inside the swimming pool gasping for breath. He had already taken umwillingly enough “glasses” of chlorinated water which got entry into his stomach through his oesophagus .

Our “chuck Norrisbeing pulled out of the swimming pool.

Lucky for him we had our diver on site . He was pulled out, Eyes wide open and gasping for air.Just about to spoil the party.!!!!. He never went back to his bottle and neither did he ate food -What a waste!!! It’s a party anyway. Before the pool incident, he was a superstar . But then his superstar kicks landed him to the pool and out with a ripped swim pants,

This incident followed by many more as expected were the epitome o a good party; Wardrobe malfunctions, friendly fights and even gents making sexual innuendo jokes. After all the theme of the party was “Getting to know each other better”.

Comrades social and interactive moments.

The venue was fairly good, the food and beverage was satisfying too. All the days activities were well organized. Thanks to our animator who apart from being an Engineer of huge repute he can as well Make very nice game moves too. He made us excercise for that day.

Music icon himself. “DOSO”

In the house was music icon who again happens to be our company executive . This guy can sing. ! He entertained us well. A company full of talent ranging from Music ,Comedy and even acrobats.

And this party proved to be a success to that level.

Food was served. Big up to the management of the hotel who made this event a memorable one.

We do apologize for the noise we might have caused that day to the residents of the facility. It was A Party anyway.

Memories

With the kenyan coastal tourism stake holders.

I have noticed many people posting memories on Factebook, memories of better times. I’ve done the same myself. This really has been a year, but there will be memories, good, bad, emotional, different! I’ve learned a lot about myself this year. I’ve also learned to appreciate the simple things in life we normally overlook. I’ve learned to be kinder and more patient especially during this covid-19 epidemic times. I remember when times were good you could share time with friends anytime no matter the number.

Upto the Covid-19 outbreak every year this time was the mombasa music and street food festival where specialist street in Kenya coastal town of mombasa were full of fun loving people to experience Street food and music especially from Coast . Mishikakis, Chicken kababs, shawarmas and even fresh juice, cassava and many more coastal foods.. Across the Ferry to south coast every year during December holidays there was Shelly beach Festival. This music festival takes place every year during December holidays.

Shelly beach Music Festival December 2019 was the last music festival I have been to in likoni and it was great. It was very different from any music festivals I have been t in Mombasa that are normally in muddy fields where it rains! This music festival was in a big sports arena that was transformed into a concert venue for the week.

The crown being intertained (2019)

The favourite act that I saw was the Dancing competition and Older version of Live band, This band produced a lot of music when I was a teenager so it was great to relive some happy memories from when I was younger. The band Master and his music is in swahili and English, all of his songs are very upbeat and happy, they are great to dance to! Another act that I enjoyed seeing was one by Radio KAYA FM crew which is a local Kenyan Coast FM station. I do not normally listen to the type of music their Dj plays, but he created a great atmosphere and drowned out the arena with their catchy and loud songs. The music festival was full of young and old people, it was great to see such a varied audience. Music fstivals are normally attended by young adults.

The day after the music festival I woke up exhausted from all the dancing and I was also still covered in glitter which one of the acts had sprayed at the audience during performance. I am very glad that I got to experience a music festival and it is definitely in my top ten best experiences of things I have done in the past. There were lots of different types of music at the festival and it was great to listen to new music and experience another side of festive culture

Radio KAYA crew on stage

This time last year we were complaining about crowded stores as we tried to buy gifts. We miss those crowded stores now, along with their Christmas music (that starts at Thanksgiving).
Enjoy the version of Christmas we have and next year, when we’re able to see our families again, this will be a memory. Make the best of it!

Shelly beach festival. With the Days Mc , Fred Okubasu- CEO, peacock media

Take care and stay safe. This too will pass.
