What A party !!

Sheraton Villagio beach hotel

This post might be a long one and a little late, however better late than never. We had our staff party a month ago and it was fun.

Office holiday parties can be a fun time for co-workers to get to know each other on a more personal level without talking of deadlines, budgets or clients.Parties can be the perfect place to celebrate the holidays together while unwinding away from the stress of the office. However, there is those co-workers who drink a little too much, makes a fool of themselves on the dance floor, overshares about something or even worse.

And making fun of the comrade..

Now here is the story. In our past event I was given a role to organize thid event due to the fact that in my previous assignment I worked for a hotel and event company which is fairly known. As such , getting the venue, Food and drink items , sporting activities were my responsibilities.

Precisely Dec, 11th -2021, was the D-Day . Coincidentally our country was as well celebrating Madaraka day(Post colonial era)in our calendar. Double celebration.

The structure of the party was such that a large swimming pool area was rented by us(Now that the venue was identified)and the costs of the event was split as such. It had all the makings of a sh*t show and it did not disappoint. Before even the party began employees pre-drank for loss of a better word.

Infact one of co-worker got so drunk till he was doing high kicks and before we realize he was inside the swimming pool gasping for breath. He had already taken umwillingly enough “glasses” of chlorinated water which got entry into his stomach through his oesophagus .

Our “chuck Norrisbeing pulled out of the swimming pool.

Lucky for him we had our diver on site . He was pulled out, Eyes wide open and gasping for air.Just about to spoil the party.!!!!. He never went back to his bottle and neither did he ate food -What a waste!!! It’s a party anyway. Before the pool incident, he was a superstar . But then his superstar kicks landed him to the pool and out with a ripped swim pants,

This incident followed by many more as expected were the epitome o a good party; Wardrobe malfunctions, friendly fights and even gents making sexual innuendo jokes. After all the theme of the party was “Getting to know each other better”.

Comrades social and interactive moments.

The venue was fairly good, the food and beverage was satisfying too. All the days activities were well organized. Thanks to our animator who apart from being an Engineer of huge repute he can as well Make very nice game moves too. He made us excercise for that day.

Music icon himself. “DOSO”

In the house was music icon who again happens to be our company executive . This guy can sing. ! He entertained us well. A company full of talent ranging from Music ,Comedy and even acrobats.

And this party proved to be a success to that level.

Food was served. Big up to the management of the hotel who made this event a memorable one.

We do apologize for the noise we might have caused that day to the residents of the facility. It was A Party anyway.

The SGR Experience

At the waiting bay.

After attending a meeting in Nairobi, the son of soil opted not to go by road to Mombasa, but use the hyped and new transport kid in the block: SGR.

For those of you who have not used it, here are my observation s

Mombasa SGR terminus.

The terminal in Mombasa is located in some bushy place with no public transport nearby. Miritini is the name of the place , 10km or so from Mombasa town and you pay more than KSH 1000 for a taxi fare for transfer into Mombasa CBD or Vice versa. My thought would be for Kenya railways to invest into commuter buses for it’s customers. The terminal in Mombasa is located in some bushy place with no public transport nearby. The fare for VIP is Kshs 3,000. Economy class is Kshs 1000 and here is where now the definition of VIP has been Misused. As a hospitality person I would want to see a gap in service and treatment between VIP and Ordinary/economy class .Not that am advocating for class war. But surely the First class customers are paying 3 times fare. So their should be a big line in between as far as Customers of the two classes are concerned.

The only benefit you get for being in first class is you get to use a lift and some reclining two row seats in the cabin. No extra food, entertainment or VIP treatment.

During meals, which you have to pay for anyway, VIP’s are rounded to go to a dinning place whilst the other Commonly known as economy are served on their seats. So who is getting first class here? The answer is obvious that the guy who is seated and gets served whilst chilling and sipping his whisky at his seat!

Once you get to the terminal, there are restaurants on site but you are not allowed to pack your food on board. So you get to wonder why. The food by the catering team on board are overpriced. If you have not sorted your eating issues from where you came from, then rest assured that sugar levels will make you faint or outrightly weak as you wait for the train to hurtle along to your destination.

However to the positive side though the security situation and the wash room facilities are excellent. You actually feel safe and you can visit the bathroom without having to worry about public facility acquired Urinary tract infections,Lol. Punctuality is commendable hence you get to depart at the agreed time as written on the travel document.

While on board you will see clearly the speed in which the train is moving which will take you 5 hours between Mombasa- Nairobi at 110Km/h. This speed gets you tired and very exhausted.Wish it could be 200km/h. The Engineer who designed the speed limit should hear this.If you have no book or good company to keep your morale high and entertained then you are in for a long time boredom.

Like my case; the guy seated next to me was a stranger who could fall asleep easily and snores and lean over my shoulder with a trickle of saliva drooling at the corner of his mouth,He was drunk ,5 hours of torture were real. Please Kenya railways, Put some TV at least for Intertainment please. This guy had not showered I think for days and thin fermented sweat could be seen drooling down his armpits.

This guy, when he woke up he kept me listening to him on his opinion which were equally intoxicated. For 1 or 2 hours he kept explaining silly things that he considers important to him with droplets of saliva all over my face.

The leg space is soo small to avoid such people on board especially If you are a tall guy with lanky legs, you better buy two tickets one opposite you to secure freedom for your legs otherwise you may come down with contractures or Deep Venous Thrombosis.

They kept on saying that you will get to see beautiful scenery in the country side . Yes true but only if you don’t doze off due to boredom. However I managed to see one red solitary elephant grazing around the Tsavo plains .The other was expanse of nothingness. The scenery is breathtaking as one can view animals from the comfort of their seats, landscape is also great as climate changes from cold Nairobi to tropical Mombasa.

Again in the hospitality industry saying this item and that items are unavailable to me is a big sin. Yes!! we in catering services do run out of staff but not to the rate which I encounteredBin board SGR.The service is annoying and unpredictable. I ordered for food.I waited for a whole 45 minutes. Then the service girl comes back after a long wait to tell me the Food is finished.Next I ordered coffee. After 30 minutes , I was told there is no milk and the option which was available was for Black tea. Black tea??!! .

My drunkered colleague ordered for a Tusker beer and he was told there is only one can of Cola soda remaining. So, is he expected to drink one can of soft drink for 5 hours?Better still even if it comes and you want a refill, it comes after two hours.

Make First class attractive by providing first class services.

The cabin service should be professional and well stocked. All in all I enjoyed my trip down to Mombasa.

Nairobi SGR terminus.
